Toronto Star – Goodale Contradicted Over Claim that No Immigration Detainee Wrote Him

Advocates for a group of hunger-striking immigration detainees were shocked Monday to hear Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale say none had replied to his request for details of why their detention was unfair. In fact, 17 of 50 detainees in two Ontario jails who ended a hunger strike in July responded to Goodale’s invitation conveyed to them by Canada Border Services Agency officials.

London Free Press – Driving School to Give Refugees a Deal on Driver Training in Arabic to Help Them Integrate

A city driving school is green-­lighting discount driver training in Arabic to help smooth the road to integration for Syrian refugees settling in London. It’s the latest addition to a list of discounts and freebies, ranging from gym memberships and computer training to summer day camp spaces, aimed at helping newcomers feel at home. More than 60 newcomers will get behind the wheel with Fanshawe Driving School after an instructor noticed refugee students struggling with English course content last month.

CBC – Canada’s Immigration Detention Program to Get $138M Makeover

The Canadian government is committing millions to upgrade immigration detention centres across Canada. Immigration detention facilities in Vancouver and Laval, Que., are also set to be replaced. Canada’s Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale made the $138-million announcement Monday morning at the Laval Immigration Holding Centre. He said the objective is to make detention a last resort.
