Metro News – Relief as 13-Year-Old Boy with Down Syndrome is Allowed to Stay in Canada

Nico Montoya can finally call Canada home. The 13-year-old boy’s immigration saga came to an end Thursday, with news the government had reversed its decision to deny his family residency because of his Down syndrome. Nico and his parents moved to Toronto from Costa Rica in 2013, after his father, Felipe, accepted a teaching job at York University. They applied for permanent residency, but were rejected after Citizenship and Immigration Canada decided Nico’s condition would be a burden on the healthcare system.

CBC – Canada Seeks to Double Visa Offices in China to Attract More High-Skilled Workers

The Canadian government is seeking to double the number of offices where Chinese can apply for Canadian visas as it looks to boost a dwindling number of visitors, international students, even high-skilled foreign workers from China. Immigration Minister John McCallum spent the past two days meeting with senior Chinese officials in Beijing where he asked to open at least five more visa application centres in Chengdu, Nanjing, Wuhan, Jinan and Shenyang. Canada currently has five visa offices in China.

CTV News – Researchers Examine Toll of War on Newly Arrived Syrian Refugee Children

Beginning a new school year can be an anxious time for some children. For those shattered by early psychological trauma, it can be especially fraught with emotion. A study underway at Western University is examining how the war-torn experiences of newly arrived young Syrian refugees might affect their ability to cope in the classroom, and researcher Mazen El-Baba hopes the findings will go a long way towards improving everything from teachers’ lesson plans to community programs to government policy.
