Toronto Star – Shaping the Future of Canada’s Immigration System

Having inherited an immigration system plagued with backlogs and heavy-handed enforcement, the Liberal government says it’s keen to hear what you think needs to be done about Canada’s immigration future. Since the beginning of the summer, Immigration Minister John McCallum and his parliamentary secretary, Arif Virani, have held more than two dozen roundtable meetings across Canada with settlement services organizations, businesses and community groups to get their thoughts.

Belleville Intelligencer – Project Helps Refugees Enter Agriculture

A new pilot project designed to help refugees enter the agricultural sector is in the works here.

Orlando Ferro, executive director with Quinte Immigration Services, said the organization is currently working a new pilot program to help refugees with previous farming experience attain employment in agriculture. It is estimated 45 per cent of government-assisted refugees in Ontario have an agricultural background from the time they lived in Syria.

Burnaby Now – Refugee Settlement Groups Call for More Funding

Burnaby Neighbourhood House executive director Antonia Beck suggested local resources are tapped and existing programs are fully subscribed, adding the organization often has to turn people away. […] Adding to the struggle, the neighbourhood house said it lost $60,000 in funding to provide settlement services after the province transferred responsibility to the federal government.   She said the organization tried to apply for federal funding but was unsuccessful. She noted organizations that didn’t have a funding agreement in the past with the Canadian government have no mechanism to apply for funding.

Radio-Canada – 60 000 personnes ont fui le Soudan du Sud

Depuis la reprise des violences dans le pays d’Afrique de l’Est, des milliers de Sud-Soudanais ont fui le pays, majoritairement vers l’Ouganda. Les réfugiés ont rapporté de nombreux groupes armés sur les routes de l’Ouganda, qui empêchent la population de quitter le pays, selon l’Agence des Nations unies pour les réfugiés.

CBC – “March for Justice for Abdirahman Abdi” in Ottawa Draws Hundreds

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, a civilian law enforcement agency tasked with investigating police officers, is investigating the actions of those two officers — Const. Dave Weir and Const. Daniel Montsion — and the circumstances surrounding Abdi’s death. It could take months to complete the probe. Neither officer involved in Abdi’s death is on front-line duty at the moment, but their employment status remains the same.

Global News – U of R Receives Overwhelming Response to Refugee Child Only Summer Camp

A new pilot program is welcoming children to a summer camp for refugees. The program is put together at the University of Regina every Saturday with assistance from the Regina Open Doors Society, and volunteers. Irene Barnes is the program coordinator and said the response to the camp was overwhelming.
