The Globe and Mail – Integral to Canada’s Economy, Immigrants Deserve More Support

Twenty-seven thousand Syrians so far; by this year’s end, perhaps 50,000. This is the tradition of Canadian refugee policy at its best. Somewhere between 30,000 and 70,000 at a time: the Vietnamese boat people in 1979-80, the Czechs in 1968, the Hungarians in 1956, the Vietnam War non-consenting Americans, Chileans, Ismailis, Tamils. That refugee tradition goes back to the almost 50,000 United Empire Loyalists in the 18th century.

The Telegram – Province Focuses on Recognizing Immigrants’ Credentials

Byrne said that as the government works on making credential recognition easier for immigrants, it’s important to note that doesn’t mean relaxing Canadian qualifications standards. More broadly, he acknowledged there’s a concerted effort to more aggressively court immigrants to come to Newfoundland and Labrador. The previous government published a population growth strategy just before it was voted out of office, and Byrne said the Liberal administration is using parts of that, but with a different focus.

CBC – Poll: Most Canadians Did Not Link Syrian Refugee Influx with Terrorism

People who backed a plan to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada in a matter of months largely expected no increased risk of terrorism as a result, newly released federal polling information reveals. About 44 per cent of those surveyed in November were in support of the plan. And of them, about 60 per cent thought there would be no change to the terrorism threat facing Canada in the next six months.
