Rahimi established the soccer academy in April because he knew, as a refugee himself, how important the sport can be to adapting in a new country and creating a new home. Born in a refugee camp in the desert in Iraq, Rahimi came to Canada in 2000. “I remember when I first came here it was really hard to make friends, it was really hard to get to anything, to find jobs, go to school but when I played soccer I easily made friends,” he said.
Abbotsford News – City Needs to Help Ensure Foreign Workers Properly Treated
The city needs to do what it can to ensure those who bring temporary foreign workers to Abbotsford are providing adequate housing, Coun. Ross Siemens said Monday as council allowed a farm to continue housing its workers in a renovated machine shed. And an advocate for such farmworkers says the federal government also has to take a look at its rules allowing workers to be housed on-site.

Time is running out for a Hungarian Roma family who wants to stay in Canada. Seventeen-year-old Gilda Lakatos and her mother Katalin have been in Canada for the last five years, becoming members of the local community, but their temporary suspension of deportation expires July 16, 2016. The Roma are a traditionally nomadic ethnic group who are among the most discriminated and vulnerable minorities in Europe, something the Lakatos family sought refuge from when they came to Canada.
U of T News – Canada Should Remove Mexico from Refugee “Safe” List, U of T Report Says
A report from the University of Toronto’s international human rights program (IHRP) investigates abuses of human rights faced by people affected by HIV and sexual minorities in Mexico. Authored by IHRP staff lawyer Kristin Marshall and Maia Rotman, JD candidate at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law, the report asks that Mexico be removed from Canada’s refugee ‘safe’ list to protect sexual minorities. Failure to do so could place Canada in violation of its international legal obligation, the report says.
