CBC – Syrian Refugee Sponsor Status Prompts Regional Agencies to Partner Up

Local refugee resettlement agency Reception House has launched a new partnership program using resources lined up for privately-sponsored refugees to address the growing number of government-sponsored Syrian refugees arriving in Waterloo Region.  Between November 2015 and March 2016, the agency received more than 800 refugees, most of whom were fleeing the conflict in Syria, according to community educator Christian Snyder.

Le Monde – L’Unicef dénonce l’exploitation des migrants mineurs dans les « jungles » françaises

Violés, contraints de se prostituer, de voler, d’accomplir des corvées quotidiennes dans les camps ou d’aider à faire monter des migrants dans les camions… Les mineurs non accompagnés qui campent à Calais (Pas-de-Calais), Grande-Synthe (Nord) et dans cinq petites « jungles » voisines sont la proie des passeurs. Signataire de la Convention internationale des droits de l’enfant, la France leur doit pourtant assistance et protection.

Le Huffington Post – Journée mondiale des réfugiés : le Canada doit en faire plus

La Journée mondiale des réfugiés se tiendra le 20 juin prochain. Tenue pour la première fois en 2001, cette journée vise à faire connaître la situation extrêmement difficile et l’urgence dans laquelle se trouvent plus de 60 millions de réfugiés et de déplacés à travers le monde. Cette journée internationale est donc très importante pour saluer le courage et l’espoir dont font preuve ces millions de réfugiés.

CBC – Syrian Doctor Says Physicians Need to be Aware of Refugees’ Special Needs

A doctor who was among the first Syrian refugees to come to Canada on a Canadian government plane is speaking about immigrant and refugee health care and the role of physicians in integrating refugees. Specifically, Dr. Vanig Garabedian wants to help Canadian doctors better understand cultural and personal barriers refugee women have in receiving gynecological and obstetrical care.

The Globe and Mail – Ottawa Vows to Cut Wait Times for Foreign Workers Joining Tech Firms

The Canadian government is promising to speed up immigration of skilled foreign workers joining fast-growing technology companies, a drawn-out process that the employers say is thwarting their growth. On Tuesday, the government launched its innovation strategy with yet another consultation process that was long on broad themes and short on specifics, identifying six areas where it will seek public input this summer, including building clusters and making it easier to do business in Canada.
