Canada’s border agency is pulling the plug on the controversial reality TV program Border Security after the federal privacy commissioner found the agency violated the rights of a construction worker filmed during a raid in Vancouver. Privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien recently informed the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, which spearheaded a complaint on behalf of Oscar Mata Duran, that the Canada Border Services Agency breached the Privacy Act by allowing production company Force Four to film the agency’s examination of the migrant labourer.

Some interesting bus shelter advertisements have begun appearing in Toronto, addressing Islamophobia and anti-immigrant sentiments in the city. The ads, posted by the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) and the City of Toronto, have been posted in response to the recent influx of Syrian refugees in December and a number of crimes against Muslims earlier in the year.

Both the provincial and federal governments have failed to cover the $2.6-million cost of integrating Syrian refugee students, Calgary’s public school board said Tuesday. “School boards across this country have stepped up to support Syrian refugee students,” said the chair of the Calgary Board of Education, Joy Bowen-Eyre. […] The CBE has taken in more than 400 Syrian students since January — equivalent to adding an elementary school to the system, Bowen-Eyre told the House of Commons standing committee on citizenship and immigration Tuesday.
