CBC – Kitchener Church, MP Decry Lack of Support for Refugees “Waiting on the Sidelines”

A Kitchener Member of Parliament is calling out the Liberal government for not doing enough to support privately-sponsored Syrian refugees following complaints by a local church that has been awaiting a family’s arrival for more than three months. Too many private sponsorship groups across Waterloo region are waiting to receive refugees with their arms outstretched, only to find that the families they are sponsoring have still not arrived in Canada, MP Harold Albrecht said Friday.

CBC – Muslim Community Reaches Out to Syrian Refugees During Ramadan

Local mosques and Islamic organizations are reaching out to bring traditions of the holiest month to Syrian refugees in Winnipeg spending their first Ramadan in Canada. “It’s important for them to see that in Canada we still do participate in the fasting while celebrating,” said Lubna Usmani from the Winnipeg Islamic Association. She coordinates the integration of the refugees into the community. Before the start of Ramadan, workshops were held to help refugees deal with the long daylight hours of June, up to 18 hours with no food or water.

Yahoo News – Undocumented Immigrants Pay Billions in Taxes: Study

Immigration reform is an especially contentious issue in this election cycle. But one nonprofit is hoping to set the record straight about at least one aspect of undocumented immigrants: According to a report by The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), undocumented immigrants pay state and local taxes like any other American citizen. The non-partisan research organization, updated its study, “Undocumented Immigrants’ State & Local Tax Contributions,” and researchers found that undocumented immigrants in the US pay an estimated $11.64 billion in state and local taxes annually.

CTV News – Guelph Named as One of the Best Places in Canada for Newcomers by Popular Magazine

Guelph has just been named as one of the best places in Canada for newcomers by MoneySense magazine. Some of the criteria for making the list was based on affordability, unemployment rate and ethnic make-up of the city. In a release from Guelph’s mayor Cam Guthrie he explains how pleased he is about the honour and congratulates the city on its efforts to bring refugee families to the area.

Reuters Canada – 3,000 Migrants Rescued Off Italian Coast; Two Bodies Found

More than 3,000 boat migrants have been rescued in the Mediterranean over the past two days and two bodies have been recovered, Italy’s coastguard said on Thursday.The coastguard coordinated rescues of migrants from 15 different boats on Thursday, bringing 1,950 people to safety. Two bodies were recovered from a rubber boat. Some 1,100 migrants were rescued at sea on Wednesday.
