CBC – Councillor Asks OCDSB to Reconsider Reduced Funding for English as a Second Language

Reducing English as a second language funding would leave recently settled Syrian refugee students without necessary support, Coun. Tim Tierney told the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board on Monday. “The whole goal is to have these people integrated and be part of our community,” Tierney said following Monday’s board meeting. […] The board is hearing public input on $9.3 million in proposed budget cuts. One of the items on the chopping block is $195,000 in funding for English as a second language teachers.

Rimouski devrait accueillir dès le mois prochain un premier contingent de deux familles de réfugiés syriens. À plus long terme, le comité rimouskois d’accueil des réfugiés syriens espère que ce seront quatre familles totalisant 13 personnes qui trouveront sur les rives du fleuve Saint-Laurent un nouveau milieu de vie paisible et prometteur d’avenir.

L’Express de Toronto – Témoignages de réfugiés : toujours la crainte des persécutions

25 000 réfugiés ont été accueillis au Canada entre le début novembre 2015 et la fin février 2016. Metro News Canada – Transportation not Deportation Campaign Wins Liberty Award

An advocacy campaign that helped end cooperation between Transit Police and immigration authorities last year was honoured at B.C. Civil Liberties Association annual gala this week. The association granted its Liberty Award for activism to the Transportation Not Deportation coalition, a campaign advocating for undocumented immigrants’ rights sparked after the suicide of Mexican hotel worker Lucia Vega Jimenez, who was arrested at a fare check in 2014.

Toronto Star – Liberals Looking at Alternatives to Detention of Child Migrants, Goodale Says

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says he wants to end the Canada Border Services Agency’s practice of detaining child migrants. Goodale told a Senate committee on Monday his department is looking at alternatives to locking away children, but he added the issue is complex and requires study. […] The Red Cross said the border agency detained 10,088 immigrants — almost one-fifth of them refugee claimants — in 2013-14 in a variety of facilities, including federal holding centres and provincial and municipal jails.
