A worker on a south Surrey farm claims he was punched repeatedly in the head by a supervisor and then brushed off by his employer, police and the Mexican consulate when he complained. The details of the incident, which the worker alleges took place May 6 at Canadian Farms Produce near Cloverdale, are contained in a WorkSafeBC claim filed by the worker, Otilio Hernández-Morales.

Toronto Star – Lawyers Join Doctors and Nurses in “End Immigration Detention” Campaign

Ontario lawyers are calling on the province to end the “arbitrary and punitive detention” of migrants held in provincial jails for violating the country’s immigration laws. The move follows a similar effort by doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals in an open letter to Ontario Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Yasir Naqvi, after a string of recent deaths involving immigration detainees.

Metro News – German Opposition Leader Attacked with Cake Over Migrants

A German opposition leader has had a cake shoved in her face at a party meeting — an apparent protest against her position that not all refugees can come to Germany. An activist threw the cake Saturday at Left Party parliamentary co-leader Sahra Wagenknecht in Magdeburg, the dpa news agency reported. A group calling itself “Anti-Fascist Initiative ‘Cake for Misanthropists'” distributed flyers pointing to Wagenknecht’s refugee comments as the motive.

Global News – Syrian Refugee Families Get Introduced to Local Services

Hundreds of Syrian refugees were invited to learn about what services are available to them and their families in Winnipeg. The family resource fair is a new event, created this year because of the large influx of refugees that have arrived in Manitoba over the past several months.

CBC – United for Refugees Campaign Hands Out $869,000 To Help Syrians New to Ottawa

The United for Refugees campaign, which launched last October to raise money to help refugees fleeing the crisis in Syria, will disburse the $860,000 raised so far to 10 Ottawa organizations and 16 private sponsorship groups. […] United for Refugees is a partnership among the United Way of Ottawa, the Community Foundation of Ottawa, the City of Ottawa and Refugee 613 that was launched at a town hall meeting last fall.
