Democracy Now – Canada Apologizes for Racist Incident 100 Years After Rejecting Komagata Maru Ship of 370 Immigrants
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has formally apologized for the 1914 Komagata Maru incident, in which Canada turned away a Japanese steamship in order to prevent more than 370 Indians, including six Muslims and Hindus, from immigrating to Canada. The move was widely acknowledged to be aimed at keeping Indians out of Canada. Then premier of British Columbia, Sir Richard McBride, said at the time, quote, “we always have in mind the necessity of keeping this a white man’s country.”
The PIE News – WES Bid to Help Refugees Lacking Academic Records
Syrian refugees in Canada will soon be able to obtain recognition for their academic credentials in a pilot phase of a new initiative from US-based World Education Services to create an alternative credential assessment system. WES is also planning to roll the initiative out in the US, and will make it available to refugees from any country after the pilot phase. The system is designed to cater for those who may not be able to access any or all of their academic transcripts from their home institutions.
Reuters – EU Ministers Make it Easier to Suspend Visa-Free Travel Amid Immigration Worries
European Union ministers on Friday backed making it easier and faster to suspend visa waiver with third countries and said relaxing travel rules for more states was not imminent amid deepening public concern about immigration into the bloc. The EU is in politically sensitive talks with Ankara on easier travel requirements for Turks seeking to visit Europe for up to three months and with no right to work. […] But some EU states are anxious about opening up to a mainly Muslim nation of 79 million people.
