The Liberal government has introduced new legislation to remove barriers to citizenship erected by its Conservatives predecessors while retaining and extending officials’ authority to deal with fraud. The changes, expected to be implemented later this year, will provide greater flexibility for applicants trying to meet the requirements for citizenship and help immigrants become full-fledged Canadian citizens sooner, said Immigration Minister John McCallum.
Syrian refugees in Regina were given the chance to learn about Canada’s Indigenous people and their culture. As part of an effort to bridge the gap between cultures, the event gave refugees the chance to meet and build relationships with First Nations people before any misinformation can take root. “[Syrian refugees] learn negative stereotypes about Indigenous people very quickly, sometimes within three days of arriving in Canada,” Rhonda Rosenberg, Executive Director, Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan said.

As Ottawa closes in on its goal to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by March 1, there are concerns from some sponsorship groups that the focus on Syrians is slowing down the process for Iraqi refugees. When the federal government began its push to bring 25,000 Syrians to Canada in November 2015, Immigration Minister John McCallum said that even though Syrians would be given priority, “other refugee populations continue to be processed as per usual and existing commitments and admission targets will be met.” But Father Sarmad Biloues, a Catholic priest based in Surrey, is convinced that Iraqi arrivals are being delayed.
