The Independent – NATO Orders Fleet to Deploy in Aegean Sea “to Help End Europe’s Refugee Crisis”

The Nato fleet is being deployed to the Aegean Sea immediately in a bid to end the flow of refugees crossing the sea into Europe from Turkey. Announcing the deployment, which will see refugee boats met by warships rather than coastguards, Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said action would be taken “without delay”. It comes after Greece declared Turkey a “safe third country”, giving it the legal framework to turn back asylum-seekers and to actively deport those who have arrived back across the Mediterranean.

L’Actualité – Immigration : où sont les avantages ?

L’immigration entraîne des avantages économiques certains pour les immigrants eux-mêmes. For the thousands of Syrian refugees expected to arrive in the U.S. in coming months, the first order of business will be securing the basics — health care, jobs, education and a safe home. CBC – Refugee Students Adapt to Regina Schools Amidst Resource Shortage

As public schools around Regina open their doors to new refugee students, the school division says it’s unable to meet all of their needs. The Regina public school system has 49 new Syrian elementary or high school students. Many of the students are paired up with English as Additional Language teachers to make the transition easier. The trouble is, the school board says there aren’t enough EAL teachers, and the board is not receiving any more money from the province or Ottawa.

Regina Leader-Post – University of Regina Researchers to Study Refugee Resilience

University of Regina researchers are examining what makes refugees successful in the Queen City. The project will involve interviews with the heads of 10 to 20 refugee families who have been in Canada for at least five years. It will focus on the idea of resilience — examining what that term means to them — and what, in their perspective, has helped them successfully integrate and adapt in Regina. Assistant professor of social work Donalda Halabuza said that can be anything from integration services, community help, formal and informal resources, and the families’ personality traits.
