A parliamentary committee is calling on the government to change how it handles permits for temporary workers after a UN report said the system creates “a breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery.” The citizenship and immigration committee released a report on Wednesday calling on Ottawa to work with the provinces to establish permits that allow temporary workers to find work in a specific region or sector. Right now, most temporary workers have closed permits that tie them to a single employer.

Marina Buey s’est installée à Sudbury avec sa famille lors de l’été 2023. Dès son arrivée, elle a pris une décision importante pour l’avenir de ses enfants : les inscrire dans une école catholique française.

Quebec Premier François Legault is raising concerns about the prospect of a “massive influx of immigrants” to the province following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election, and he says Quebec has already reached capacity. During a news conference Wednesday in Quebec City, Legault said Canada must “act quickly” to secure its borders against a possible wave of migrants looking to escape Trump’s threat of mass deportations. “We’ll be calling on the federal government to fulfil its responsibility to protect our borders,” he said. “The problem isn’t immigrants, it’s the number. We already have too many. So we shouldn’t add to the problem.”

Reseau du Nord is a Francophone Immigration Support Network that helps settle Francophone newcomers in northern Ontario. The federal government recently included the organization as one of 24 Welcoming Francophone Communities Initiatives in the country. With this week being National Francophone Immigration Week, Reseau du Nord hosted several public consultation sessions to gather ideas on how to attract and retain French-speaking newcomers.

Legault a notamment dit s’attendre à ce que des actions qui pourraient être négatives pour l’économie du Canada et du Québec soient posées par M. Trump et son équipe, notamment dans les secteurs de l’aéronautique, de l’aluminium et du bois. Il faut dire la vérité : il y a des emplois qui sont en jeu, a-t-il dit.
