CBC – Deported Roma Have Little Chance of Return Despite Disciplinary Rulings Against Their Lawyers
Refugee advocates are trying to reopen the cases of hundreds of Roma families who were denied refugee status in Canada after being bilked by their lawyers. The three Ontario lawyers handled thousands of claims from Roma families between 2008 and 2012 and collected hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal aid fees, but only a small percentage of their clients were ever accepted as refugees. In the case of two of the lawyers, both of whom have since been disciplined by the Law Society of Upper Canada, only one per cent of their Roma refugee claims were accepted while other lawyers handling Roma cases had average acceptance rates of around 10 per cent, with some as high as 30 per cent.

CBC – Normal for Syrian Refugees to Want Choice of Housing, Says Parliamentary Secretary
After an Ottawa settlement agency raised concerns about Syrian refugees turning down housing over its location, the parliamentary secretary for Canada’s immigration minister says that’s a normal request for immigrants. Carl Nicholson, the executive director of the Catholic Centre for Immigrants, said Thursday that some government-sponsored refugees are turning down the housing options they’re offered because they want to be closer to people they know, near mosques or away from areas where they’ve heard gang activity exists.
CBC – Toronto Lawyer Outlines Security Risks of Syrian Refugees to U.S. Lawmakers
This week a U.S. Senate committee took a closer look at Canada’s plan to fast-track Syrian refugees, and whether it comes at a cost to American security. “We have a pretty unsecure border with Canada, it’s just never really represented much of a threat,” said Republican Senator Ron Johnson, speaking earlier this week at a Senate committee in Washington. “Islamic terror represents a threat. This is real. It is growing. This is a legitimate concern. We are all compassionate. We want to solve these problems but we want to recognize our responsibility to do everything we can to keep this nation safe and secure.”
