680 News – Feds say No to Ontario’s Idea for Housing Government-Assisted Refugees

The federal immigration minister is pouring cold water on an idea from Canada’s largest province to have community groups and families house government-sponsored refugees living in hotels. John McCallum said the idea to have private sponsors temporarily house government-assisted refugees makes sense on its surface, but the government has found too many flaws in the proposal. McCallum said the government has a “duty of care” over government-sponsored refugees, and it also doesn’t want to see refugees move to one home, only to have move again.

CBC – For Syrian Refugees, Finding Job should take Back Seat to Learning English, says Agencies

Some settlement agencies say not all Syrian refugees should be so hasty to join the workforce. They want the refugees to spend a bit of time learning the language if they need to rather than jumping into the job market. Josie Ditzio works with new arrivals at COSTI Immigrant Services, the official settlement organization in Toronto for government-assisted refugees. She encourages Syrian refugees to learn a little English first, then start applying for jobs to ensure they don’t get left behind.

Al Jazeera English – Deadliest January on Record for Refugees Raises Alarm

The number of refugees who have died while trying to reach Europe has surged to a January record of more than 230 people, fuelling panic that much more needs to be done to prevent further deaths. As of January 29, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded the deaths of at least 244 refugees and migrants who tried to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, nearly three times the 82 people who died last January, and overwhelmingly more than the 12 people who died in January 2014. Some 55,528 refugees and migrants have arrived to Europe so far this year, according to the IOM.

CBC – Canada Needed as “Honest Broker” on World Stage, ex-UN Refugees Chief Says

“Canada has been, during the 10 years I was high commissioner for refugees, a very reliable partner and a strong supporter of our activities worldwide,” said Guterres in a phone interview with CBC News on Thursday. Guterres’s tenure at the helm of the UN refugee agency was marked by some of the largest displacements of refugees fleeing conflicts in Syria and Iraq. “More recently, Canada has adopted very important measures with the resettlement quota for Syrians and with the increased support to the humanitarian action of the UNHCR and other humanitarian agencies,” Guterres said.
