Metro News Canada – International Students Eye Top-Notch Education “at a Reduced Price” in Canada

Hundreds of thousands of international students flock to Canadian univesities each year. But prospective students from the U.S. may find Canadian schools even more enticing this year thanks to the low loonie. That’s good news for Canada’s universities and local economies, but it could make it more difficult for Canadian applicants to get acceptance letters from some schools. “A lower Canadian dollar does mean (some international students) can get a university education that’s among the world’s best at a reduced price,” said Richard Levin, the University of Toronto’s executive director of enrolment services and university registrar.

Toronto Star – At Least 46 People Drown Off Greece, as Nations Put More Controls on Entry

The death toll in Europe’s migration crisis rose Friday when two overcrowded smuggling boats foundered off Greece and at least 46 people drowned — more than a third of them children — as European officials remained deeply divided on how to handle the influx. […] At least 800 people have died or vanished in the Aegean Sea since the start of 2015, as more than 1 million refugees and economic migrants entered Europe. About 85 per cent of them crossed to the Greek islands from nearby Turkey, paying large sums to smuggling gangs for berths in unseaworthy boats.

Stratford Beacon Herald – United Way Perth-Huron Funds Additional Newcomer and Refugee Services

The United Way Perth-Huron is funding a new initiative that will help ease the transition for newcomers and refugees in the region. A total of $5,000 will be provided to the Avon Maitland District school board’s Centre for Employment and Learning (CEL) to help it increase its support role over the next three months. With the funding, the CEL will provide needs assessment and referral services by increasing hours for current English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors throughout Perth and Huron counties.

Hamilton Spectator – Extra Mental Health Funding for Refugee Children Running Out

The Hamilton organization responsible for providing mental health care to Syrian refugee children has received only a small amount of extra funding that will run out March 31. In fact, it’s not expected the money announced by the province Friday will help many Syrian refugees at all. “We won’t see referrals for quite a while,” said Karen Smith, executive director of Thrive Child and Youth Trauma Services. “Some will present symptoms right away and they’ll get picked up quickly. But the majority will find their way here over weeks to a number of months.” By that time, the extra cash will be gone and no more is coming, says the head of Lynwood Charlton Centre, which leads children’s mental health in Hamilton.
