CBC – Express Entry, Foreign Worker Reforms Attract “Fewer” Skilled Workers: Chamber Report

Canada risks losing its competitive edge because of immigration reforms brought in under the previous Conservative government for political expediency, says a new report by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The report is critical of the Express Entry immigration system launched one year ago and reforms to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program made in June 2014 following a series of stories published by CBC’s Go Public team alleging abuse of the program. The chamber calls on the federal government to conduct an immediate review before things get worse.

Hamilton Spectator – Asking Syrian Refugees for Six Months Rent Upfront “A Little Excessive,” says CRRA

As Syrian refugees attempt to start a new life in Calgary, many are running into issues trying to rent homes or apartments, according to a representative from the Syrian Refugee Support Group. Sam Nammoura, who volunteers with the group, said many refugees who have accessed the support group are being asked by landlords to pay six months’ rent, plus a damage deposit in order to rent property. […] Gerry Baxter, executive director of the Calgary Residential Rental Association (CRRA), said although it’s not illegal for landlords to ask for six months’ rent upfront, it’s a rather steep price for almost anyone.

Edmonton Journal – More than 100 Edmonton Lawyers Train to Handle Pro Bono Refugee Sponsorship Claims

More than 100 Edmonton lawyers and law students gathered Wednesday afternoon to learn how to assist groups and families looking to sponsor refugees. The increase in Syrian refugees coming to the city has led to a greater need among families, church groups and other private sponsors to navigate the sponsorship process. Debbie Klein, executive director of the Edmonton Community Legal Centre, said while sponsors don’t necessarily need a lawyer for the process, their expertise can be invaluable.
