Community groups are still working to bring refugee families here to Oxford County while helping those in need. Refugees who are being aided federally will most likely not be coming to Oxford, but many local groups have been working to bring some families here. In Ingersoll, for example, a group called the Ingersoll Refugee Committee is bringing a family of seven from Syria to live in Ingersoll and has been greatly supported by the community.

Thousands of Edmonton’s Ukrainian families celebrate Orthodox Christmas this week, many with the traditional Sviata Vechera, or 12-dish meal on Christmas Eve. It’s a traditional that goes back a long way, and 2016 marks a milestone for Canada’s Ukrainian community—125 years ago the first influx of Ukrainians, both Orthodox and Catholic, arrived in the country, in what would be the first of four major waves of immigration. Now, a researcher from the University of Alberta says the history of the Ukrainian community could have lessons for handling modern influxes of immigrants.

The newly restored Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) applies mainly to supplemental benefits such as prescriptions, dental and vision care.
