CTV News Winnipeg – Program Prepares Refugee Students for School

A Winnipeg organization is helping ease Syrian refugee students into their first day of school in a new country. The Newcomer Employment Education Deployment Service, or NEEDS Inc., is offering programs to new government-sponsored refugee students to help prepare them for their first day of classes.

CBC – Province Expecting Influx of Refugee Children Under the Age of 12

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development cannot confirm how many Syrian refugee children will be enrolled in New Brunswick’s schools, but Tammy Strong, the department’s diversity and respect co-ordinator, says about 40 per cent of those expected to arrive in the province will be under the age of 12.

National Post – Liberals Scrambling on Family-Immigrant Targets After Promising to Double Intake “Immediately”

The federal immigration department has said it will be accepting the same number of applications this year as it did in 2015 from parents and grandparents wanting to join family members in Canada, despite a Liberal election promise to double the intake “immediately.” Immigration Minister John McCallum’s office said Monday that McCallum remains committed to fulfilling the election promise, and will be consulting with cabinet in the coming weeks to make it happen.

CBC – Syrian Refugees Pose Challenges for B.C. Schools

The interrupted education is one of the biggest challenges for school districts welcoming Syrian refugee children. “Based on what we have seen so far, and what we are expecting, an average student has missed school for three years. So we’re looking at a three years’ gap in schooling,” said Haval Ahmad, a settlement worker at the Burnaby School District. “Some schools existed in the refugee camps, but really there were no sets of standards.”
