More than 1 million people driven out of their countries by war, poverty and persecution entered Europe in this record-breaking year, migration experts said Tuesday, a symbolic milestone capping a mass movement of people that has challenged the concept of European unity.

With no end in sight to the Syrian conflict, the refugee crisis will only worsen in 2016, War Child Canada’s Samantha Nutt has warned. Speaking to CTV’s Power Play on Tuesday, Nutt said that while there’s more will than ever to achieve peace in Syria, it is unlikely to happen next year.

At schools where there is already a significant immigrant or refugee population, there are programs in place and both staff and students are experienced in helping newcomers. Hess Street School in downtown Hamilton is one such school. It has a large multicultural population of students, many who have recently come to Canada as refugees.

With just days left in 2015, the Geneva-based International Organization for Migration said 1,005,504 people had entered Europe as of Monday, more than four times as many as last year. Almost all came by sea, while 3,692 others drowned trying to make the crossing.
