Toronto Star – Border Agency Punishes Detainee by Prolonging Detention, Tribunal Told
Canadian border enforcement officials had a “hidden” policy of punishing immigration detainees by prolonging their detention if they refused to co-operate in the deportation process, a tribunal has heard. The claim was made at a detention review Wednesday by the lawyer of Abdirahmaan Warssama, 51, a Toronto man who has been held for five-and-a-half years at the Lindsay jail for deportation to Somalia.
CBC – Syrian Refugee Family’s Arrival in Halifax Delayed
A privately-sponsored Syrian refugee family expected to arrive in Halifax on Thursday has been delayed, while a wave of government-sponsored Syrian refugees will touch down in Toronto and disperse across the country. A Syrian mother, father and two children were expected to arrive in the province today but they’ve been delayed and the reasons aren’t clear, says the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia.

City staffers are recommending a task force be created to help co-ordinate the support services should Syrian refugees be re-settled in Cornwall. The first planeload of refugees, expected to arrive Saturday from Jordan at Trudeau airport, will be all privately-sponsored refugees — the responsibility of family members, faith groups or individuals who have stepped up to help them — with one government-assisted refugee transiting through Montreal to another city in Canada. Aghasi, the director of the Centre social d’aide aux immigrants — the one organization in Montreal that is mandated to help government-assisted refugees (GARs) — has been told she may only get 48 hours notice before her new clients arrive.

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that a Tamil teenager who fled the violent aftermath of Sri Lanka’s 27-year civil war should have his refugee application reconsidered on humanitarian grounds. By a 5-2 margin, the high court on Thursday reversed a decision by the Federal Court of Appeal that upheld the rejection of Jeyakannan Kanthasamy’s claim that he would suffer serious hardship if he returned to his homeland.
Blackburn News – Province Tops up Refugee Supports
London’s Cross Cultural Learner Centre is among eight organizations that are getting top-up funding from the province to help resettle Syrian refugees. Organizations in six Ontario cities will share another $3.7-million to support first-language settlement services, trauma counselling and mental health services, housing assistance and employment supports.
