CBC – Chinese Investors Claim They Were Guaranteed Immigration to Canada

Five Chinese investors are suing a Maple Ridge, B.C. developer for allegedly guaranteeing them immigration to Canada in exchange for an investment in a proposed hotel. In two separate British Columbia Supreme Court lawsuits, the plaintiffs claim they agreed to invest a total of $7 million into the project developed by Seiko Huang.

The Record – Liberals to Restore Refugee Health Benefits

The federal Liberals say they are poised to restore refugee health benefits slashed by the previous Conservative government. Health Minister Jane Philpott said Friday the needs of Syrian newcomers would be covered as they arrive and word will come soon about reversing the overall cuts to refugee health care.

Ottawa Citizen – Immigration Lawyer Lobbying Government to Reopen Ottawa IRB Office

As Canada showers newly arrived refugees from Syria with care and attention, an Ottawa immigration lawyer wishes the government would make it easier for refugees that are already here. Arghavan Gerami is calling on the government to reopen an Immigration and Refugee Board office in Ottawa that was closed in 2014, forcing already-stuggling families to travel to Montreal for their hearings.

Trudeau’s ‘Sunny Ways’ welcome for 25,000 Syrian refugees is the polar opposite of America’s Republican Party, whose leading figures have stoked fears over terrorists entering the United States. Leading the charge against refugees is Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, who claimed in a speech that the Obama Administration wanted to take in 200,000 Syrians.

Edmonton Journal – Edmonton-Bound Refugees Stuck in Beirut

An Edmonton group sponsoring a Syrian refugee family that was turned away from a Beirut airport says the federal government must intervene to get the family to Canada. Four years after fleeing Syria’s civil war, Iwan and Zamzam Dalaa, along with daughters Karima, 3, and 15-month-old Ayat, spent the last of their money travelling to a Lebanon airport Wednesday ready to begin a new life in Edmonton, said Colm MacCarthy, who’s a member of a St. Joseph’s College group sponsoring the family. Their flight was cancelled and a Lebanese security official took all their immigration documents away, MacCarthy said.

CBC – Syrian Refugees Get Warm Welcome at Armenian Community Centre

Hugging her father tightly, Cerli Katchadorian said the best thing about Canada is the playground. Soon, the seven-year-old will get to play there every day when she goes to the school attached to the Armenian Cultural Centre in north Toronto. But today, she is one of the 92 Syrian refugees who came to the centre for a joyous welcome on their first day in this country.
