A legislative committee is recommending government and newcomers’ organizations encourage refugees to pursue careers in agriculture and fisheries. Robert Henderson, chair of the standing committee on agriculture and fisheries, said encouraging newcomers to work in primary industries could help them find employment, while reducing the province’s reliance on temporary foreign workers.
The first wave of Syrian refugees will arrive in Toronto and Montreal by plane later this week before they “fan out” to cities and towns from coast to coast to start their new lives, Immigration Minister John McCallum tells CP24. Visiting a GTA apartment where a privately-sponsored family of six Syrian refugees is expected to live once they land, McCallum confirmed that the first planeloads of refugees will touch down on Thursday “or thereabouts” in Canada after departing from camps throughout the Middle East.
Immigration Minister John McCallum told reporters today that the federal government remains focused on housing to help with the influx of Syrian refugees coming to Canada in the coming months. […] With private sponsors currently helping with 10,000, the total number of Syrians coming to Canada will be at least 35,000 and could hit 50,000 with enough sponsorships.
