Canada and the United States have both committed to increasing the number of Syrian refugees they will accept in the face of the global migration crisis and pressure from their European allies.
Although the goal of the two North American countries is the same — alleviating the plight of Syrians fleeing their war-torn country — the numbers and the resettlement process are not. The U.S. has pledged to accept 10,000 refugees in the next year while Canada has said it will welcome 25,000 by next March.
Vancouver Sun – Huge Tuition Increase Approved for UBC’s International Students
The University of B.C.’s board of governors has approved tuition increases for international students of 37 per cent over the next three years for most undergraduate programs. International student fees will rise 15 per cent in each of the next two years, and seven per cent in 2018. Increases that range from three per cent to 50 per cent were approved for some graduate programs as well, while other graduate program tuition increases have yet to be determined.

Windsor might have a very healthy residential vacancy rate, but the city is having a difficult time finding the right kind of housing for an expected flood of Syrian refugees expected at its doorstep in the coming weeks. “We are struggling,” said Kelly Goz, Windsor’s co-ordinator of housing administration and development. The biggest challenge in preparing for the hundreds of anticipated arrivals over the next three months is finding an adequate supply of appropriate housing, she said.

The community immigrant integration plan released Wednesday by the Peterborough Immigration Partnership “articulates the goals that need to be met to achieve the vision and mandate” of the group, chairman Andy Cragg told those gathered for the release.

Canadian front-line border agents now have access to more information on travellers contained in Canada’s law enforcement database, a significant change in the way visitors are checked for potential security risks, CBC News has learned. Until now, front-line border agents did not have access to information contained in the Canadian Police Information Centre database when checking the backgrounds of the millions of travellers who arrive at Canada’s border crossings every month.
CBC – Small Canadian Towns Opening Their Doors to Syrian Refugees
Concern for the plight of Syrian migrants appears to be mobilizing rural Canada, with residents in small communities across the country raising their hands and offering to help settle thousands of refugees. On Thursday, federal immigration department officials said more than 65 Canadian towns outside of Quebec, which has a separate immigration system, are now prepared to welcome displaced Syrians.
