Preparing for the arrival of an influx of Syrian refugees in Canada, many school boards say their institutions are ready to welcome immigrant students — no matter how many arrive. One of those institutions is Greenwood Secondary School. For decades, the Toronto high school has helped hundreds of immigrant families with matters like housing and employment.
The British Columbia government expects more than 200 privately sponsored Syrian refugees will arrive here by the end of the year – though it remains unclear how many of the 25,000 refugees expected nationwide by the end of February will settle in the province.Immigration and Refugees Minister John McCallum, B.C. Jobs Minister Shirley Bond and representatives from settlement organizations and community groups met Wednesday in Surrey to discuss arrival, resettlement and integration plans for the refugees.
A senior United Nations refugee official is urging Canadians not to draw any hasty conclusions after new government numbers suggested that thousands of Syrian refugees had turned down the opportunity to come to Canada. Alors que le Canada a accepté la venue de 25 000 Syriens, des Haïtiens dont le statut de réfugié a été révoqué demandent l’intervention du nouveau gouvernement Trudeau, avant leur déportation imminente. «C’est faire preuve d’humanisme que d’accueillir les Syriens qui fuient la mort et les violences, mais nous aussi on la fuit», lance Fitz, arrivé il y a 7 ans, qui attend de savoir si sa demande de résidence permanente a été acceptée.
Le ministre fédéral de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté ne voudrait pas que les Canadiens croient que les réfugiés syriens sont trop bien traités. Lors d’un forum sur l’accueil des réfugiés, organisé chez le gouverneur général à Ottawa, le ministre John McCallum a dit être bien conscient que plusieurs Canadiens cherchent de l’emploi, que plusieurs citoyens démunis attendent d’avoir accès à des logements sociaux.
