Toronto Star – Syrian Refugees’ Impact on Ontario Housing will be Minimal: Experts

Ten thousand people may sound like a lot of bodies to house, but by the time the Syrian refugees settle in permanent housing in Ontario, no one will even notice, say housing and settlement experts. With 10,000 of the 25,000 Syrians destined for the province, University of Toronto urban planning professor David Hulchanski said roughly 2,500 housing units would be required considering most refugees will come as families and live under one roof.

Ottawa Citizen – Military to Play Backup Role Only on Refugee Plan

The Canadian military has freed up 6,000 beds on bases across Ontario and Quebec but Syrian refugees will only go to those locations as a last resort if housing can’t be found elsewhere. […] the large role first envisioned for the Canadian Forces, including potentially housing up to 13,000 refugees, has been scaled back.

CTV News – Refugees Deadline Pushed to February; Emphasis on Families, Vulnerable Women, LGBT

The Trudeau government has revealed that it will not meet its deadline to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by New Year’s Day. Instead, the Liberals expect 10,000 to land by Dec. 31, an additional 15,000 in January and February – and at least 10,000 more later in 2016, for a minimum of 35,000. […] McCallum said he had heard concerns that Christians avoid refugee camps, but the government is intending to take asylum seekers from outside camps as well, so Christians will be included.
