CBC – Europe Refugee Crisis: EU Wants Africa to Take Back Migrants

The European Union pressed African leaders on Wednesday to take back thousands of people who do not qualify for asylum, as overwhelmed Slovenia began building a razor-wire border fence to keep migrants at bay, raising tensions with neighbouring Croatia. Sweden, struggling to manage the influx too, became the latest EU nation to announce the introduction of temporary border controls, as of Thursday.

CBC – Syrian Refugee Influx Expected in Calgary Prompts Warnings of Housing “Chaos”

Housing a big influx of Syrian families in a short amount of time could result in “chaos,” the head of an immigrant services society says. The Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) is preparing for the arrival up to 2,300 Syrian refugees in Calgary — possibly over the next six to eight weeks. […] “It will be chaos,” said Fariborz Birjandian, who heads CCIS — the largest immigration organization in southern Alberta.

The Guardian (UK) – EU’s Deep Dilemmas Over Refugees Laid Bare at Malta Summit

The faltering start in Greece to sharing refugees in Europe highlights the EU’s multiple dilemmas, as leaders meet in Malta on Wednesday and Thursday for their fifth summit since June on the emergency. The confusion, disputes and mudslinging of the past few months have opened up a fundamental question. Do they want a Europe of open or closed borders? The dilemma is embodied in the diametrically opposed policies of the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, and Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán.
