Maryam Monsef is the new MP for the bellwether Ontario riding of Peterborough–Kawartha. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau elevated her to his 31-member cabinet — making her the youngest minister and the fourth-youngest ever.
Toronto Star – Ottawa Urged to End Deportations to Burundi Amid Soaring Violence
With growing unrest and ethnic tension seething in Burundi, Ottawa has offered failed asylum seekers from the landlocked African country a chance to prove to officials their lives would be in danger if deported. However, there is no promise the pre-removal risk assessment or PRRA would spare them from deportation to the country the United Nations warns is once again on the verge of civil war.
CBC – Immigration Minister John McCallum: 6 Challenges He Faces
In the campaign, the Liberals promised to double the number of parents and grandparents who could be sponsored to Canada from 5,000 per year to 10,000 per year. In 2014 and 2015, demand for such applications was so high the quota was reached within the first few weeks of those years. Increasing the number of applicants accepted each year will not solve this issue. At the present time, some parent and grandparent applications can take over 10½ years to process.

Newly-minted Immigration Minister John McCallum says a campaign promise to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees remains the Liberal government’s goal. And McCallum, who served as the Liberals’ immigration critic in the last Parliament, says he’s not backing away from Jan. 1 as the target date for fulfilling that promise. With only eight weeks remaining, McCallum says he is waiting to be briefed intensely on the file.

Le gouvernement fédéral a pris contact avec une organisation d’aide aux immigrants de Nouvelle-Écosse pour qu’elle se prépare à accueillir un flot de réfugiés syriens. On ignore pour le moment le nombre de ces réfugiés et à quel moment ils arriveront en Nouvelle-Écosse. « Présentement, nous faisons le ménage de nos bureaux pour être prêts lorsque nous aurons plus de détails », souligne Claudette Legault, directrice des programmes et des services pour l’Association des services aux immigrants de la Nouvelle-Écosse (ISANS).
