CBC – Refugee Crisis: EU Leaders Meet at Emergency Summit

As EU leaders hold an emergency meeting to tackle the refugee crisis, Slovenia is demanding swift action from the European Union to help stem the flow of refugees and migrants. About 58,000 have arrived in the small country in just one week. At a hastily called emergency summit in Brussels, 11 EU and Balkan leaders were especially looking to shore up Greece’s porous border with Turkey and slow the flow of people heading north toward the European Union’s heartland.

CBC – “Would Canada Take Us?” The Cry from Germany’s Refugee Shelters

October 24, 2015

Just days after Canada elected a new prime minister, word of his plans to take in more Syrian refugees had already reached about 40 Syrians frustrated at being sheltered in a Hamburg gymnasium. “How many are they taking?” one of them asked, pulling at his donated jacket against the rain. “Would Canada take us?” Not likely. The 25,000 Justin Trudeau has promised to bring to Canada by the end of the year will likely come directly from the Middle East. These would be documented refugees already registered with the UN, and not from among those now on European soil.

Vancouver Sun – B.C. Prepares for Refugee Influx

If Justin Trudeau makes good on his commitment to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year, it will mean an almost threefold increase in the annual number of refugees to B.C. in the space of a couple of months. That has people tasked with resettling refugees in Metro Vancouver scrambling to ensure the necessary services are in place. B.C. typically receives between 800 and 900 government-assisted refugees each year, said Chris Friesen, settlement services director with the Immigrant Services Society of B.C., the organization charged with providing initial housing and orientation.
