Environ 80% des demandeurs d’asile qui ont déposé une demande de statut de réfugié au Canada dans les années 2000 ont perçu des prestations d’aide sociale, selon des données rendues publiques jeudi par Statistique Canada. Au cours de la seconde année de résidence des personnes dont la demande d’asile était toujours active, ce taux a diminué pour s’établir entre 50 à 60%. Globalement, ce sont donc de 2 à 4% des prestations totales d’aide sociale versées chaque année au pays — qui s’élèvent généralement entre 10 à 13 milliards $ — qui étaient destinées aux demandeurs d’asile au cours de la dernière décennie.
Radio-Canada – Ottawa tarde à tenir ses promesses à l’endroit des réfugiés syriens
Presque un mois après avoir annoncé des mesures pour accélérer l’accueil de réfugiés syriens au Canada, le gouvernement conservateur n’a toujours pas posé les gestes promis. Le 19 septembre dernier, Ottawa a annoncé une série de mesures pour s’assurer que toutes les demandes de réfugiés syriens déjà reçues soient traitées « avant la fin décembre » et que 10 000 réfugiés syriens puissent s’installer au Canada avant septembre 2016, soit 15 mois plus tôt que prévu.

Mexico’s campaign to stem a tide of illegal immigrants from Central American countries to the United States has led to a surge in complaints of abuse by migration officials, including violent attacks and extortion. Under U.S. pressure, President Enrique Pena Nieto in July 2014 launched a plan he said would make Mexico’s southern border “safe for Mexicans and migrants alike”. […] But complaints of abuse at the hands of Mexican officials shot up around 40 percent, data obtained by Reuters shows.
