The Globe and Mail – Canada Can’t Let Labour Mobility Create an Underclass of TFWs

We like to think of economic migration as people coming to Canada to live, work and eventually become full citizens. While this still happens, it has been eclipsed by growth in temporary migration through two main government streams: the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), and the International Mobility Program (IMP).

Toronto Star – Why Immigration is a Chequebook Issue

Even with its current jobless rate of 7 per cent, Canada is coping with severe shortages of skilled workers throughout the economy. Among the most prominent examples are in health care; engineering; entrepreneurship and leading-edge business management practices; advanced construction methods; and scientific and technological research and development.

Reuters Canada – Turkey Grumbles as EU Hails Deal to Stem Migration

Turkish leaders accused Europeans on Friday of treating their country shabbily and warned that a new deal with the EU to help stem the flow of migrants to Europe was not completely finalised. Officials in Brussels, where EU leaders agreed overnight to offer Ankara cash, easier visa terms and a “re-energized” consideration of its EU membership bid, voiced cautious optimism that Turkey would do its part to encourage Syrian refugees not to head to Europe and to deter economic migrants from Asia.

Toronto Star – Despite Promises, Ottawa Still Slow to Act on Syrian Refugee Crisis

Almost one month after the Conservative government announced measures to accelerate the resettling of Syrian refugees in Canada, it still has not doubled the number of staff handling sponsorship applications. […] As for a promise to providing additional agents to deal with visas in embassies, the department is talking about sending more in the future.
