Whistler’s emergency resolution seeking action from the federal government to increase help to Syrian refugees has been passed by members of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) at their annual convention in Vancouver. It passed on Friday morning, Sept. 25, with roughly 20 votes against it, said Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden. “All the rest were in favour,” she said. “It is historic. The UBCM has never passed a resolution before commenting on the federal government’s humanitarian efforts or lack thereof, and the resettlement of refugees.” The resolution calls on the federal government to act immediately to accelerate the process for settling refugees and to “significantly increase federal commitments to receive Syrian refugees in Canada, matching or exceeding historic levels.” […]The next step is to take the resolution to the federal government. “The UBCM on their own will send correspondence to the federal government. I don’t know the timing,” Wilhelm-Morden said.
Yahoo News – RCMP Refutes Claim that More Syrians are Crossing Border Illegaly
RCMP say they haven’t noticed any influx of Syrian or Iraqi refugees into Quebec, contrary to a media report that residents along the Canada-U.S. border have seen such a spike. Cpl. Camille Habel, spokeswoman for the Mounties in Quebec, confirms that RCMP officers were called to intercept a group of migrants Wednesday morning that had crossed from the United States in the Montérégie region. But Habel says migrants and refugee claimants do cross the border. “It’s routine,” she tells Yahoo Canada News. “It’s not daily.. It’s not weekly but it happens.” A report in La Presse says there has been a growing number of migrants crossing the border from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Citing local residents, the media outlet says at least 15 Syrian and Iraqi migrants have entered Canada illegally in the past month near the town of Dundee, along the border with New York state, including the six migrants that arrived Wednesday morning. […] But Habel says the local RCMP office in Valleyfield, which is called in by the provincial police when migrants arrive, has not reported any increase or decrease in the numbers of migrants at the border.

Depuis un mois, au moins une quinzaine de migrants syriens et irakiens sont entrés illégalement au Canada via Dundee, en Montérégie. Ils seraient arrivés aux États-Unis par avion avant de traverser la frontière à pied. Le nombre croissant d’immigrants franchissant la frontière dans les champs de Dundee trouble les habitants de cette municipalité rurale. Un groupe de six migrants irakiens a été intercepté hier matin dans la municipalité de Dundee, située à la frontière canado-américaine en Montérégie.

Plusieurs Syriens fuyant la guerre se sont installés à Chatila, près de Beyrouth, l’un des plus anciens camps de réfugiés au Liban. Mais la vie n’y est guère facile pour ces familles, qui dépendent de l’aide internationale pour subvenir à leurs besoins. Au fil des ans, le camp de Chatila s’est développé de façon anarchique. Ses rues étroites sont traversées de fils électriques qui s’entremêlent à des tuyaux de plomberie. Elles ne permettent pas la circulation en voiture.

Avocat spécialisé en droit de l’immigration, Me Stéphane Handfield n’a pas entendu parler d’une « filière » facilitant le passage de migrants clandestins en Montérégie. « Mais la situation s’est déjà produite ailleurs », note-t-il. Dernièrement, des passeurs avaient organisé un réseau dans la région de Sherbrooke pour faire passer surtout des gens de la communauté rom. Pour ce spécialiste, « tant que nous durcirons les règles permettant aux immigrants d’arriver au pays, nous les condamnerons à faire affaire avec des crapules et à passer de façon clandestine, au lieu de passer par les postes frontaliers ».
Le Droit – Ottawa se mobilise pour les réfugiés syriens
La stratégie de mobilisation pour les réfugiés syriens prend forme à Ottawa. Une nouvelle organisation, Réfugié 613, a été lancée jeudi pour mieux coordonner les efforts visant à accueillir dans la capitale nationale les personnes touchées par la crise syrienne. Ce «guichet unique» s’avère le premier pas important pour orienter les citoyens cherchant à s’impliquer davantage, a soutenu le maire Jim Watson. «Nous ne savons pas combien de réfugiés nous recevrons, ni quand ils arriveront, mais nous en voulons plus que ce qu’il a été proposé par le gouvernement et nous voulons nous préparer pour les accueillir convenablement», a-t-il déclaré.
