CBC News – New Ontario funding meant to help international agri-food workers feel more welcome

Engaged and supported — that’s how the provincial government says it wants international workers to feel while they’re labouring in Ontario’s agricultural industries. To encourage those feelings, the province has announced a new funding initiative that will provide $1.5 million across Ontario over the next four years in order to create a “more welcoming environment” for those workers. Rob Flack, the province’s minister of agriculture, food and agribusiness, visited Kingsville on Friday to make the announcement. “Our government is grateful for the contributions (international workers) make to our province, and this initiative is a reflection of our commitment to enhance their well-being and quality of life when they are here in Ontario,” Flack said.

CBC News – A 9-year push to increase P.E.I.’s population has radically changed the Island

More than 20,000 people have arrived from other countries, roughly 10,000 are foreign nationals living on P.E.I. with temporary permits and a greater number have arrived from other parts of Canada than the almost 30,000 who left for other provinces. This motion of people has caused crises in housing, health care and general pressure on provincial infrastructure of all kinds. The mass migration to and from P.E.I. dates back to 2015, when Wade MacLauchlan became leader of the Liberal Party and premier at the same time. MacLauchlan spoke about immigration, as well as keeping talented Islanders at home and attracting them back. He expressed concern about an aging population and the need to rejuvenate.  Accelerated population growth began almost immediately.

CBC News – Some N.L. international students in limbo due to new work permit rules

A Grand Falls-Windsor international student says the federal government’s changes to post-graduation work permit eligibility have left him and some of his classmates in limbo. Johnny Alubu Selemani, international student representative for the Newfoundland and Labrador chapter of the Canadian Federation of Students, said he’s heard from students paying a premium to study in Canada who are now worried they may not be able to work in Canada in their field after graduation. Miller said there will be a new language-proficiency requirement for applicants, and graduates from programs at public colleges — like College of the North Atlantic — will now only be eligible for a permit if their area of study is linked to labour market shortage in Canada.
