Aujourd’hui, l’honorable Marc Miller, ministre de l’Immigration, des Réfugiés et de la Citoyenneté, a annoncé que le nouveau Programme pilote pour les étudiants dans les communautés francophones en situation minoritaire (PPECFSM) sera lancé le 26 août 2024, en partenariat avec des établissements d’enseignement désignés (EED) postsecondaires de langue française et bilingues. Le ministre Miller a également annoncé l’ajout de dix communautés à l’Initiative des communautés francophones accueillantes (CFA). Le ministre a fait ces annonces à l’occasion du Congrès mondial acadien, en Nouvelle-Écosse.
Radio-Canada – Les États-Unis serrent la vis aux demandeurs d’asile à la frontière canado-américaine
Dans une nouvelle initiative afin de limiter les passages irréguliers, le gouvernement des États-Unis compte durcir ses contrôles à la frontière canado-américaine. Washington resserrera ainsi les exigences envers les demandeurs d’asile en apportant deux modifications à l’Entente sur les tiers pays sûrs (ETPS). Désormais, les migrants arguant qu’ils ne sont pas soumis à l’ETPS devront fournir immédiatement aux agents frontaliers les documents nécessaires pour le prouver. Auparavant, ils pouvaient reporter leur contrôle frontalier, le temps de rassembler les documents nécessaires.

Ottawa is launching a new pilot program to attract and retain Francophone international students, providing them with a direct pathway for permanent residency in Canada after graduation. The initiative is touted as a flagship measure of the new Francophone immigration strategy meant to boost the French-speaking population outside of Quebec, which has declined since 1971 from 6.1 per cent of the Canadian population outside the province to just 3.5 per cent today, threatening the country’s bilingual national identity.
Reuters – Canadian immigration minister says temporary worker program needs reform
Canada’s temporary foreign worker program is not fatally flawed but is “in need of reform,” the country’s immigration minister told Reuters on Tuesday, following a damning U.N. report that dubbed the program a breeding ground for modern slavery. The program brings non-Canadians to the country to work on a temporary basis. Ostensibly meant to fill labor shortages, it has grown dramatically and has come under fire for suppressing wages and leaving workers vulnerable to abuse.

Le document final d’un rapporteur spécial des Nations unies qui s’est rendu au Canada l’année dernière souligne qu’un déséquilibre des pouvoirs empêche les travailleurs d’exercer leurs droits. Le statut des travailleurs dépend d’un permis de travail fermé propre à un employeur. Si les personnes sont licenciées, elles peuvent être expulsées du Canada.
