Globe and Mail – Human-Trafficking Conviction in Nanny’s Case Hailed as Precedent-Setting
Authorities and domestic worker advocacy groups across Canada are applauding this week’s landmark human-trafficking conviction in British Columbia, calling it a precedent-setting victory in the fight against a crime that has seen fewer than 50 guilty verdicts in Canadian history. Franco Orr, who was accused of keeping Filipina nanny Leticia Sarmiento in domestic servitude in B.C. for nearly two years, was convicted Wednesday of human trafficking, employing a foreign national illegally and misrepresenting facts that could induce an error.

Rappelons que le Trifluvien d’origine Ivoirienne et Mme Trottier ont un fils de 16 mois et attendent des jumeaux pour le mois d’août. Le ministère de Citoyenneté et Immigration Canada a refusé d’accorder le statut de résident permanent à Abou Fofana, ébéniste-menuisier et père de famille débarqué au pays en 2008, après l’évaluation du dossier par la Commission de l’immigration et du statut du réfugié du Canada.

Continuing industrial action by the Canadian Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) is causing increasingly long waits for Canadian visa applicants who apply abroad. Particularly affected are applicants under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) as well as students and tourists. […] PAFSO is the union for Canadian government staff who work in other countries. Its members include immigration staff as well as diplomats, lawyers and economists. PAFSO members have been engaged in industrial action since June 6th.
