Toronto Star – Hard Times in Greece Add Pressure on Migrant Workers
The bloodletting this week in Greece’s southern strawberry fields shocked the nation and put the spotlight on the plight of the financial crisis’ overlooked victims: hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, many undocumented, whose lot is becoming even tougher amid rising racist violence and dropping living standards. […]Police said the shootings near the village of Manolada followed an altercation between the Greek foremen and some 200 workers demanding six months’ unpaid wages. When the foremen left the scene, the Bangladeshis began hoping that management was preparing to offer a solution. But the foremen returned with two shotguns and a handgun and opened fire […] A total of 28 people were sent to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries.
Ottawa Citizen – Ontario Announces New Funding for Immigrants
New immigrants settling in Ottawa will have more access to services designed to help them fit in and find a job in the country they now call home. Liberal MPP Yasir Naqvi announced Friday that newcomers to the capital would be able to take advantage of provincially funded settlement services, which aim to help people who have been in the country for some time but might still need help with language or job skills development. As part of a two-year, $14.9-million provincewide program, three community organizations in the city centre will receive a total of $600,000 over the next two years, with the caveat that the money be used to support newcomers.
Radio-Canada – Intégration de travailleurs français en Alberta
Une séance d’information a été organisée à la Cité francophone d’Edmonton vendredi pour orienter des nouveaux arrivants qui viennent de France. Ce service est offert aux immigrants dans le cadre d’un projet pilote du Conseil de développement économique de l’Alberta et de l’entreprise Greentree Outdoor Living. Ces deux organisations ont recruté 36 stagiaires et travailleurs qualifiés en aménagement paysager afin qu’ils partagent leur expertise avec les Albertains. Jusqu’à présent, une vingtaine de travailleurs français ont assisté à la première séance pour découvrir les services disponibles dans leur langue maternelle en Alberta.

Porté par la CRÉ de Montréal, Alliés Montréal est un projet qui regroupe des entreprises qui conçoivent l’immigration comme une solution d’affaires. Il vise la mise en valeur des talents d’origines diverses et l’intégration durable des compétences issues de l’immigration dans les entreprises montréalaises

[…] « Ces vidéos viennent s’ajouter au nouveau guide Bienvenue au Canada et fournissent aux nouveaux arrivants une liste de contrôle pratique des choses à faire pour préparer leur venue au Canada et pour faciliter leur installation au pays. » dit le ministre Kenney.
Feministing – The [U.S.] Draft Immigration Reform Bill is a Mixed Bag for Women and LGBTQ Folks
In the wee hours of the morning yesterday, after much anticipation, we finally got a first draft of the immigration reform bill the Senate has been working on for the last few weeks. […] Undocumented folks will be able to apply for Registered Provisional Immigrant status, which will allow them to work and stay in the United States legally. To get this, though, folks will have to pay a pretty hefty fine and go through a stringent background check, meaning that even immigrants with a few minor run-ins with the cops will be completely barred from this process. […] While this may seem reasonable to some at first glance, it’s important to remember that these things play out pretty clearly along lines of race, class, and gender. […] During the long path from RPI status to citizenship, low-income immigrants aren’t eligible for public assistance, like Medicaid or food stamps.
