Ottawa Citizen – Kenney Seeks to Broaden Bill to Strip Citizenship

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney Thursday voiced his support for a private member’s bill that would strip Canadian citizenship from dual nationals who commit acts of war against Canada. Kenney said he would like the bill broadened to also apply to dual citizens committing acts of terrorism and high treason. […] Kenney said most democratic nations, including the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, have legislation in place that allows them to revoke citizenship if it’s in the public interest and that Canada, by passing the proposed bill, would align itself with the norm. Currently, Canadian citizenship can only be revoked if a person was found to have obtained it fraudulently. The bill would only apply to dual or multiple citizens because Canada has international commitments to reduce the number of stateless people.

Timmins Press – Immigration Vital to Workforce

Looking to avoid a skilled labour crisis in the future, a handful of organizations in the city are acting now. The Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) and the Timmins Local Immigration Partnership (TLIP) have joined forces to make Timmins more attractive for skilled and qualified workers coming from abroad. […] Brenda Camirand, the TEDC’s community development consultant, said attracting educated immigrants isn’t just a luxury – it’s a necessity. […] Since the creation of a settlement office in the city, Camirand said the TEDC has seen an “exponential rise over the past two years of newcomers coming to the area that are seeking services through that office.” In particular, Namibia has been a major source of contribution when it comes to skilled workers for Timmins.

Globe and Mail – Reality-TV Immigration Raid Spurs Human-Rights Complaint

A migrant worker who unwittingly starred in a reality-television show about Canadian border guards was already back in Mexico on Thursday when a rights group filed an official complaint with the federal privacy watchdog over his treatment at the hands of the Canada Border Services Agency. […] When he was found lacking the proper documents to work in Canada, the complaint filed by the B.C. Civil Liberties Association said, Mr. Mata Duran and several others were taken into custody at a downtown immigration detention facility – the video camera trained on them the entire time.
