The provincial minister responsible for immigration says changes to the Nova Scotia Nominee Program should actually open the doors to more people. “International graduates will now be encouraged to apply for permanent residency through the federal Canadian Experience Class,” said Marilyn More. “This eliminates the need for the international graduate stream in the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, opening the door for more skilled workers.” The nominee program is used to recruit and select immigrants who intend to settle in Nova Scotia. The international graduate stream will close March 28.

Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney concluded a productive visit to Baghdad, Iraq, part of an international trip focusing on bilateral relations and religious freedom. He is the first Canadian Minister to visit Iraq since 1976. “This official visit to Iraq was an historic opportunity to help strengthen ties between Canada and Iraq,” Minister Kenney said. “As Iraq continues its transition to a democracy, it is important that Canada work with the government to ensure protection for minority rights and help establish stable and enduring democratic institutions.”
Winnipeg Free Press – Canada Took Less Refugees Last Year, Despite Pledge to Increase Numbers
Refugee groups are accusing the Conservatives of backtracking on a pledge to increase the number of refugees resettled to Canada. Statistics show the number of refugees resettled in Canada in 2012 was down 26 per cent from 2011, despite repeated claims by the government that it`s aiming to increase refugee levels by 20 per cent. The figures also show the government didn’t meet its own target for the number of refugees it planned to resettle. What was supposed to be an intake of between 7,500 and 8,000 ended up only being 5,412.

Radio-Canada – Demandes d’embauche sans réponse: les agriculteurs du Québec inquiets
Des agriculteurs du Québec sont inquiets : à moins d’un mois du début des travaux agricoles, bon nombre d’entre eux n’ont pas reçu d’approbation de leurs demandes d’embauche de travailleurs étrangers et Service Canada est aux abonnés absents. Quelque 8000 travailleurs étrangers viennent temporairement au Québec chaque année pour aider aux récoltes, avec l’accord d’Ottawa. Mais entre 20 et 25 % des requêtes des employeurs sont encore sans réponse du gouvernement canadien, indique Denis Hamel, directeur général de l’organisme FERME, la fondation des entreprises en recrutement de main d’œuvre agricole étrangère.

Plus de 15 000 super visas pour parents et grands-parents ont été délivrés depuis le lancement du programme en décembre 2011, a annoncé aujourd’hui le ministre de la Citoyenneté, de l’Immigration et du Multiculturalisme, Jason Kenney. Avec plus de 1 000 super visas délivrés chaque mois, le taux d’approbation, qui est de 86 %, demeure élevé. Le super visa pour parents et grands-parents – un visa pour entrées multiples valide pour une période pouvant aller jusqu’à 10 ans – permet aux parents et grands-parents d’effectuer des séjours au Canada d’une durée maximale de deux ans à la fois. Les parents et grands-parents ont ainsi la liberté de faire des allers-retours entre le Canada et leur pays sans être soumis à de longues périodes d’attente.
