The most contentious part of Arizona’s immigration law finally has approval to move forward, surviving a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, a heated national debate and two years of state politics. But the practical effect of what critics call the “show me your papers” provision remains to be seen. Immigrants are worried they’ll be harassed by officers emboldened to pull them over because they look Hispanic. Officers — who will be required to ask people they encounter while enforcing other laws to show they’re in the county legally if they find them suspicious — say they’ll be open to lawsuits if they’re accused of racially profiling, or if they’re accused of not adequately enforcing the law.
Montreal Gazette – Turks and Caicos Lifts Temporary Ban on Deporting Haitans Who Came Before Earthquake
The Turks and Caicos Islands will resume deportations of Haitians who were in the British Caribbean territory illegally before their country’s devastating earthquake, the government said Thursday. Immigration authorities in the island chain just north of Haiti consulted with officials in Britain and decided the temporary suspension of deportations was no longer warranted, the government said in a statement. The deportation ban affected only Haitians already in the Turks and Caicos before the January 2010 earthquake, while illegal immigrants who arrived later have been regularly sent home.
Winnipeg Free Press – New Home for Those Who Help Newcomers
Manitoba’s new ‘one-stop shop’ for immigrants was publicly unveiled Wednesday in the heart of Winnipeg’s downtown. The Manitoba Start program, which helps match newcomers with employers, had its grand opening at its new location inside the refurbished Avenue Building on Portage Avenue, between Smith and Garry streets. Fatima Soares, the program’s executive director, said 200 clients a day have been coming into the downtown office for help since its relocation to Portage Avenue in May. Immigration is key to Manitoba’s economic growth. Last year, Manitoba welcomed close to 16,000 newcomers. The province’s goal is to increase that number to 20,000 per year.

Today many young people have targeted President Obama with sit-down actions in his campaign offices, pressuring for passage of the Dream Act. Many of them came to this country as children, without documentation. President Obama showed some sympathy for these “Dreamers” last June, when he announced a decision within the department of homeland security to free 800,000 of them from the threat of potential deportation proceedings: […] Many celebrated the announcement, then challenged the president to act on his pledge. Several activists got themselves detained so they could enter the Broward Transitional Center, a pre-deportation jail in Florida, and interview detainees. They found dozens of people who are eligible for release under President Obama’s policies, but who languish in the jail nevertheless.

Drawing over 100,000 visitors a month, the tool presents users with a series of questions and, based on their answers, matches them with the federal immigration option that best suits their specific circumstances.
Calgary Herald – Drilling Training Program Addresses Skilled Workforce Shortages
A unique drilling training program is addressing the skilled workforce shortages issue in the province’s oil and gas industry. On Wednesday, 16 students will graduate from a 15-week training program prepared to fill much-needed entry-level positions in the Alberta oil and gas industry. The Oil and Gas Training Program (OGTP), developed by the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, is delivered in conjunction with Enform and is specifically developed to train immigrant and new Canadians with the skill set they require to work in the oil patch.
