Depuis le 30 mai, à 12 points d’entrée de la frontière canado-américaine, le gouvernement fédéral restreint les heures pendant lesquelles il est possible de pratiquer « l’aller-retour » pour renouveler son statut d’immigration temporaire. Parmi ces points d’entrée, cinq se trouvent en Colombie-Britannique. La pratique de l’« aller-retour » permet à une personne qui n’est pas canadienne de renouveler son statut temporaire en traversant brièvement la frontière des États-Unis. À son retour au Canada, cette personne peut, entre autres, confirmer ou renouveler son statut de résident temporaire, un permis de travail ou un visa d’étudiant.

Des travailleurs étrangers qui protestent contre des changements apportés à un programme d’immigration provincial en sont à leur septième journée de grève de la faim, et pour certains à leur troisième journée de grève de la soif. Mercredi, des soins médicaux ont dû être prodigués à certains. « Je me sens étourdi parfois. J’ai perdu connaissance », raconte Jaspreet Sing Sivia, un porte-parole du groupe. Lui et d’autres travailleurs sont installés sur le terrain de l’Assemblée législative à Charlottetown.

The group is made up of prospective immigrants, and they say their lives have been turned upside down by changes the province made to its immigration policy in February. Those changes make it much harder for people working in sales and service to be nominated for permanent residency by the province.
