London Free Press – Immigration Officers Tough it Out in Pakistan

Stressed out Canadian immigration officers in far-flung Islamabad are struggling to keep up with their workload while weeding out fraudsters, documents suggest. The posting “requires hardy and committed officers who can take the pressure, day in and day out” far from family and friends, according to an internal Citizenship and Immigration Canada report acquired by lawyer Richard Kurland through access to information requests. In early April, there were more than 5,000 family-class immigration cases pending at the Canadian High Commission in Pakistan.

CBC – Closure of Immigration Office Creates Gaps

Community groups say the closing of the federal government’s Citizenship and Immigration Centre in Sudbury is making it more difficult for immigrants to access services and information. Marie and Thunder Bay offices were also shut down. People in Sudbury who need to access immigration services now have to travel to Toronto.

The Guardian – Europe’s Immigration Challenge

Europe faces an immigration predicament. Mainstream politicians, held hostage by xenophobic parties, adopt anti-immigrant rhetoric to win over fearful publics, while the foreign-born are increasingly marginalised in schools, cities, and at the workplace. Yet, despite high unemployment across much of the continent, too many employers lack the workers they need. Engineers, doctors, and nurses are in short supply; so, too, are farmhands and health aides

Globe and Mail – B.C. Lawyer to Launch Constitutional Challenge Against Tamil Smuggling Case

A lawyer representing one of the men accused of smuggling Tamil migrants into Canada says he plans to argue the charges his client faces are unconstitutional. Peter Edelmann says Section 117 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act is so broad and vague it can apply to most legitimate refugees, including mothers. The section criminalizes organizing, aiding or abetting undocumented persons to get into Canada.
