The federal cabinet could discuss plans as early as next week to provide a path to citizenship for thousands of migrants living in Canada without valid documents, including rejected asylum seekers, so they can remain here legally.
The Moncton region has the second-fastest-growing metro population in the country, Statistics Canada reported this week. The region, that includes Dieppe, Riverview and surrounding areas, had a population of 178,971 as of July 1, 2023 — a 6.1 per cent increase from 2022. Its growth rate was essentially tied with the Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo, Ont., area and was just ahead of Calgary. The national statistics agency attributed the growth “in large part to strong international migration.” In New Brunswick, population growth over recent years has smashed records dating back to Confederation.

Environ 150 travailleurs immigrants à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard ont plaidé leur cause devant l’édifice de l’Assemblée législative, jeudi, et devant un comité de députés. Ils manifestent ces jours-ci contre un changement apporté par le gouvernement provincial à un programme d’immigration. Ils craignent de se retrouver bientôt obligés de quitter le pays. Le groupe demande au gouvernement une exception aux travailleurs immigrants déjà installés dans la province. Le gouvernement a annoncé en février qu’il allait réduire le nombre de candidats à la résidence permanente de 25 % cette année.

Une étude de Statistique Canada basée sur le recensement de population de 2021 montre que la ville de Surrey, en Colombie-Britannique, est la deuxième du pays où le taux d’étudiants étrangers qui vivent dans un logement de taille non convenable est le plus élevé. La première ville du pays est Brampton, en Ontario, où 63 % d’étudiants étrangers vivent dans un logement trop petit. Surrey arrive en deuxième position, avec un taux de 61,1 %. Vancouver, avec un taux de 29,2 %, affiche une proportion plus faible.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller is expected to table legislation today that would extend citizenship to some children born outside of the country. In 2009, the Conservative government changed the law so that Canadian parents who were born abroad could not pass down their citizenship unless their child was born in Canada. Amendments to the Citizenship Act in 1977 and 2009 also stripped thousands of people who were born abroad of their Canadian citizenship.
