CBC News – Immigration fuels population growth across Quebec, statistics institute says
Nearly all regions in Quebec saw population growth between the July 2022 and July 2023, with the largest booms in Montreal and Quebec City. According to data released Wednesday by the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ), half of the province’s regions recorded their highest growth rates since data collection began at this geographic level in 1986-87. Montreal experienced the strongest growth of all regions, with its population increasing by 89,600 — a 4.3 per cent rise compared to the province’s overall 2.3 per cent. This growth accounted for 44 per cent of the province’s total annual increase, the ISQ says. Despite losing many residents to other regions, Montreal’s population growth was driven by substantial international migration gains.
Toronto Star – Statistics Canada findings buck trend on over-educated immigrants
The rate of immigrants hired in jobs they are overqualified for has dropped to the lowest rate in 20 years, says a new Statistics Canada study. Using census data, researchers examined the educational achievements of immigrants and the educational requirements for their occupations. Overeducation or education-occupation mismatch is defined as when someone with at least a bachelor’s degree is employed in a position requiring no more than a high school education. The 2021 census found only 26.7 per cent of recent immigrants were over-educated for their jobs, down from 31.1 per cent in 2016. Those in jobs fitting their qualifications went up to 44.4 per cent from just 40 per cent over the same five-year period.

La région de la Capitale-Nationale arrive au deuxième rang après Montréal dans les taux de croissance démographique régionale grâce à l’immigration, selon l’Institut de la statistique du Québec. Entre les mois de juillets 2022 et 2023, 20 678 personnes de plus se sont installées dans la région, les migrations internationales y sont pour 18 494 de ses nouveaux arrivants. En ajoutant le solde de 340 personnes qui sont arrivées de l’extérieur de la province, les gains totaux grimpent à 18 834 personnes pour la Capitale-Nationale en 2022-2023.

On the eve of a national conference in Ottawa, the head of the Canadian Bureau for International Education said its 2023 international student survey has shown some worrying signs that challenge Canada’s image as a safe, stable and welcoming place as a result of the recent public backlash and drastic changes to the international student program.

Le Devoir – Beaucoup d’étudiants étrangers vivent dans des logements surpeuplés
Un nouveau rapport de Statistique Canada révèle que les étudiants étrangers étaient plus susceptibles en 2021 de vivre dans un logement inadéquat que les étudiants nés au Canada. L’étude, basée sur les données du recensement le plus récent, indique par ailleurs que les étudiants indiens sont plus susceptibles que les étudiants d’autres pays de vivre dans un logement « de taille non convenable » — qui ne compte pas suffisamment de chambres à coucher pour le nombre d’occupants.
