Gary Goodyear, minister of state for science and technology, announced the government is expanding the federal skilled worker category to include PhD students in certain streams, noting the country lacks people with expertise in science, technology, engineering and math.

But there will be fewer spouses and dependent children, and fewer live-in caregivers, Kenney added — not because Ottawa doesn’t want them, but because they are not coming in numbers as large as in the past. “It’s a projection,” he explained.

Canada intends to accept up to 1,000 international PhD students per year as permanent residents through the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Minister of State (Science and Technology) Gary Goodyear announced today, on behalf of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney. “Doctoral graduates play a unique role in the economy. They drive research, encourage innovation and pass on their knowledge through teaching,” said Minister Goodyear. “And quite simply, Canada needs more of them.”
Toronto Star – Peel Immigrant Agency Loses Lawsuit
A Peel immigrant settlement agency shut down amid allegations of financial mismanagement has lost a lawsuit it filed against the federal government. In an order issued last week, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice dismissed a motion by the Inter-Cultural Neighbourhood Social Services to proceed with a $12-million lawsuit against Citizenship and Immigration Canada and two government officials, alleging negligence and breach of duty. It was a setback for the Mississauga-based agency, which closed in 2009 after immigration officials terminated its annual $5 million funding. The group provided language, employment and referral services to 40,000 immigrants a year.
