OTTAWA — The federal government says people who managed to escape the Gaza Strip no longer qualify for a special program to reunite with extended family members in Canada if they didn’t finish the application process before they left.
The government launched a special visa program in January that would offer temporary refuge to as many as 1,000 people in Gaza who have extended family members in Canada.

Mme Marcelino indique que la province s’efforcerait de traiter le nombre maximum de candidatures en 2024, car « cela représente beaucoup pour de nombreuses familles de nouveaux arrivants », selon elle.
CTV News – Why experts say more international students are applying for asylum in Canada
From 2022 to 2023, there was a 324 per cent increase of international students from Conestoga College in Kitchener, Ont., applying for asylum in Canada.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada confirms 450 students from the college applied for asylum in 2023 compared to 106 in 2022.
People can apply for asylum or refugee status if they have reason to fear returning to their home country.

Terre d’accueil de demandeurs d’asile depuis bientôt deux ans, la Ville de Cornwall réclame aux gouvernements fédéral et provincial un « soutien financier urgent ». La municipalité du sud-est de l’Ontario demande d’avoir sa « juste part », soulignant que d’autres centres urbains ont obtenu du financement. À la fin du mois de janvier, Ottawa avait annoncé débloquer 362,4 millions de dollars pour faciliter l’accueil des demandeurs d’asile. Les demandeurs d’asile représentent aujourd’hui près de 2 % de la population de cette municipalité, qui compte environ 46 000 habitants.
