On Thursday, Chrystia Freeland was asked whether Canada has an immigration problem. In her response, she suggested Canada has a housing problem.
Canada, she argued, is the most welcoming country in the world for newcomers and enjoys an economic and competitive advantage as a result. But “if we want to be a country that welcomes new Canadians — and I strongly believe that’s the right thing for all of us,” she said, “we have to build more homes faster.”

New permanent residents’ incomes compared to the general population have “improved considerably” over four years in Canada, according to Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux.
The Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) released its independent report Friday on how the median income of new immigrants changed and some of the underlying factors behind it. The PBO provides independent economic and financial analysis to Parliament aimed at budget transparency and accountability.

A new federal program will allow 1,000 Palestinian family members of Canadian citizens to seek refuge here for three years. But there’s no guarantee refugees will be able to leave Gaza, Immigration Minister Marc Miller tells Power & Politics. Palestinian-Canadian Omar Omar says he hopes to reunite with his family through the program.
La Presse – L’écart de revenus pour les nouveaux immigrants a réduit de moitié en quatre ans
L’écart de revenu entre les nouveaux immigrants du Canada et les autres travailleurs canadiens s’est considérablement réduit, indique vendredi un nouveau rapport du Directeur parlementaire du budget (DPB). Le rapport révèle qu’en 2018, les nouveaux immigrants – ou ceux qui sont résidents permanents depuis seulement un an – avaient un revenu médian équivalent à environ 78 % du revenu gagné par tous les contribuables. En 2014, ce pourcentage était de l’ordre de 55 %.

Le ministre fédéral du Logement, Sean Fraser, et son collègue de l’Immigration, Marc Miller, affirment que le gouvernement s’efforce à stabiliser le nombre de personnes qui entrent au pays chaque année, alors que les pressions en matière de logement augmentent.
La Presse canadienne a fait état, jeudi, de documents internes de 2022 démontrant que des hauts fonctionnaires de l’Immigration avaient prévenu leurs sous-ministres qu’une augmentation importante de l’immigration pourrait affecter l’accès au logement et aux services.
