In 2023, Canada’s population of non-permanent residents (NPRs) grew by more than half a million people, part of the steepest single-year rise in at least five decades of available data.
In a report last week, Statistics Canada (StatCan) counted a total of 2.5 million NPRs as of this October, up from 1.7 million the same time last year. The 2023 growth shatters previous year-to-year records in the available data, tripling the increase of nearly 170,000 between the summers of 2018 and 2019.
Ottawa is offering a lifeline to people fleeing an escalating civil war in Sudan if they have relatives in Canada who agree to financially support them.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller says this new humanitarian pathway is for both Sudanese citizens and other foreign citizens who lived in the northeastern African country when conflict broke out in mid-April.

L’Île-du-Prince-Édouard continue de voir sa population augmenter principalement par le fait de l’immigration. Avec un système de santé qui semble à bout de souffle et une crise qui dure dans le secteur du logement, de nouvelles voix s’élèvent pour demander au gouvernement provincial de ralentir l’immigration afin de pouvoir régler ces problèmes. L’Île-du-Prince-Édouard a beau être la plus petite province du Canada, elle figure dans le trio de tête de la croissance démographique.
