CBC – Ontario to ban Canadian work experience requirement in job postings
Ontario plans to ban employers from requiring Canadian work experience in job postings or application forms, the labour minister announced Thursday, saying it will be an important step to help newcomers get their foot in the door.
Ontario would be the first province to dismantle that barrier in the hiring process, Labour Minister David Piccini said.
New Canadians bring a wealth of knowledge, skills and ability, but recent immigrants with a bachelor’s degree are twice as likely as their Canadian-born counterparts to work in jobs that require only a high school education, he said.
Immigrants to Canada are increasingly leaving this country for opportunities elsewhere, according to a study(opens in a new tab) conducted by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship and the Conference Board of Canada.
Factors that influence onward migration include economic integration, a sense of belonging, racism, homeownership, or a lack thereof, and economic opportunities in other countries, the report revealed.
CBC – ‘No International Students!!’ As need grows, Brampton food bank turning some away
A Brampton food bank has decided to close its doors to international students, amid an overwhelming demand it says it can’t meet.
Board president Catherine Rivera says Ste. Louise Outreach Centre of Peel can’t provide enough food and other supplies to its customers because of the influx of international students showing up at the food bank since September.
But others in the same line of work are calling out the food bank for using anecdotes rather than data to support its decision. They should have to, if they’re using anecdotes to shut their doors on people who only have $668 a month, said Jindi Singh, national director of Khalsa Aid.

La semaine dernière, le fédéral a annoncé ses cibles en immigration francophone pour 2024, 2025 et 2026. Dès 2024, le taux s’élèvera à 6 % pour cette catégorie de nouveaux arrivants. Il s’agit d’un chiffre deux fois moins élevé que ce que souhaitait la Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada (FCFA) pour 2024. Le ministre de l’Immigration, Marc Miller, a déclaré avoir fait le pari du « réalisme ». On se devait d’être plus ambitieux dans nos visées, indique-t-il d’abord. Il explique que ce 6 % représente malgré tout une augmentation par rapport à la dernière cible en vigueur, de 4,4 %, atteinte seulement l’année dernière.
