Le Centre d’accueil et d’accompagnement francophone pour immigrants (CAFi) est fort occupé à la veille de la rentrée scolaire au Nouveau-Brunswick. L’organisme qui accompagne les nouveaux arrivants offre un programme de francisation, mais il n’arrive pas à répondre à la demande. L’organisme a travaillé fort cet été pour aider les enfants allophones à se familiariser avec le français avant la rentrée scolaire. Trois camps d’été ont permis à 125 jeunes de goûter à la langue de Molière, dans plusieurs cas pour la première fois.

Dans un contexte de crise du logement, plusieurs acteurs dans l’éducation postsecondaire francophone comprennent l’intention du gouvernement fédéral d’établir une limite du nombre de visas accordés aux étudiants étrangers. Cependant, tous sont d’accord pour épargner les établissements francophones en milieu minoritaire. Depuis la déclaration du ministre fédéral du Logement, Sean Fraser, d’étudier la possibilité de limiter l’émission de visas aux étudiants étrangers, de nombreuses voix s’élèvent dans les communautés francophones en milieu minoritaire.

Le nombre de ménages prestataires de l’aide sociale au Québec a enregistré cette année sa plus forte augmentation en plus de 25 ans. Une hausse en grande partie provoquée par l’afflux record de demandeurs d’asile dans la province et aux délais d’Ottawa pour leur délivrer des permis de travail. Selon les données les plus récentes du ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale (MESS), depuis le début de l’année 2023, le nombre moyen de ménages bénéficiant de l’aide financière de dernier recours au Québec s’élève à 254 621.

Femi Biobaku came to Canada more than a year ago fleeing persecution from the Nigerian authorities, forcing him to leave his wife, two children, community and job as an accountant back home. He landed in Ottawa in July 2022 and stayed with a host family for nearly a month before moving into a dorm at the Ottawa Mission homeless shelter, where things took a turn for the worse.
CBC News – Refugees Sleeping in Toronto Churches Continue Calls for Government Support
After spending days or weeks living in an emergency shelter at a Toronto church, dozens of asylum seekers and refugees want action from the provincial and federal government. On Thursday, asylum seekers who have been living at Pilgrim Feast Tabernacles in Etobicoke staged a protest outside Premier Doug Ford’s constituency office at 823 Albion Road. Nadine Miller, a director with the church, says its been housing about 150 people and neglecting bills to pay for their food.
Reuters – Canada Concerned About ‘Integrity’ of Student-Immigration System, Minister Says
Canada is on track to bring in 900,000 international students this year, Immigration Minister Marc Miller said in the interview aired late on Saturday, which was more than at any point in history and roughly triple the number who entered the country a decade ago. The university ecosystem that brings in foreign students “is very lucrative and it’s come with some perverse effects, some fraud in the system. Some people taking advantage of what is seen to be a backdoor entry into Canada,” Miller said.
